What is an internship?

An internship is a process of placement of a graduate in a workplace to undergo experiential learning targeting young unemployed graduates with a complete degree or national diploma in a certain field of study. The Internship Programme affords Eastern Cape unemployed graduates with an opportunity to gain experiential learning under mentorship through equipping them with skills in - line with their field of study.

Whilst the ultimate aim of government is to produce a competent and employable work force, the most immediate aim of the programme is to alleviate poverty hence the stipend of about R5000.00 per month is paid to an intern. The internship programme runs for a period not exceeding twelve months.

The Internship Programme is endorsed by national government and this carries a mandate informed by transcripts which among others include the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, Skills Development Act, Skills Development Levies Act, Employment Equity Act, Public Service Regulations as amended, and Labour Relations Act.

  
What regulates an internship?

Background

In 2002 the Cabinet approved the Human Resource Development Strategy for the Public Service, which included an Internship Framework and a Scarce Skills Strategy. The framework seeks to establish an effective and efficient Internship programme aimed at bridging the gap between academic study and workplace requirements by offering structured Internship programme seeking to provide opportunities to unemployed youths.

How do I apply for an internship?
 Prospective candidates must register their Curriculum Vitae with the Eastern Cape Unemployed Graduates Database at www.ecprov.gov.za under Eastern Cape Unemployed Graduates Database Menu.
 Must be a resident from the Eastern Cape, not older than 35 years.
 Candidates from designated groups are encouraged to apply.
 Candidates will be sourced, selected and screened from the Eastern Cape Unemployed Graduates Database. The department does not personally accept CV’s from prospective Interns.
 The candidate must have a post matric qualification, that is, be in possession of the Degree/ National Diploma in the required field of study or an academic record if not yet graduated.
Must be unemployed with no experience.
 The candidate must have never been an intern before.
 The candidate must be prepared to be deployed in any of our six Regions i.e. Cacadu, Amathole, Chris Hani, UKhahlamba, OR Tambo, and Alfred Nzo and/or where the skill is required.

Is there a guarantee to retain an intern at the end of the term?
The Internship is a 12 months fixed experiential learning programme. The department is under no obligation to appoint or retain an Intern upon end of the term.
