Summer calendar unleashes the province’s delightfulness
Officially launching the Eastern Cape Summer Campaigns Programme, the MEC for the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), Mlungisi Mvoko declared the province a key player for South Africa in terms of niche experiences that tourists within and beyond the country desire.
According to MEC Mvoko, this is because of its natural beauty and bountiful tourism offerings it has.
The sector is a catalyst for economic development in the province and country and it is on these bases that our government has committed R6.9m to upgrade tourism access roads in the Eastern Cape, announced Mvoko. There is also hope and expectation that with the VISA challenges now resolved, the country and province would see more growth in this and coming seasons.
Mvoko also reflected on the 2019 year saying it was a good year for the province, making reference to the Springboks victory with key role players coming from the province; Miss South Africa and Idols winners Zozibini Tunzi and Luyolo Yiba, both coming from this ‘Home of Legends’.
Turning to the business of the day, MEC Mvoko said: “Today as we launch an important part of our marketing mix for this province including its events that already draw thousands of visitors to the Eastern Cape, stimulating the creation of economic benefits in the process, I can’t help but be proud”. Following the tabling of the provincial summer calendar, Mvoko could not hold his delight.
“There’s something for everybody here – from Berlin November on the 30th of November and East London’s fabulous Switching On of the Festive Lights on the 1st of December – through to New Year’s Eve on Hobie Beach, Cricket at St George’s Park as SA takes on England and Uncle Nick’s Prawn Chicken and Octopus Festival on the 31st of January In Port Elizabeth,” added Mvoko.
He said the calendar tabled will easily showcase- what’s to be discovered, experienced and explored in the province.
Locals are encouraged to travel more – to take more Sho’t lefts – to discover the amazing places right on their doorstep.
There’s also been a Summer Bucket list of iconic must-visit Eastern Cape places to assist travellers when planning their Summer holiday in the Eastern Cape and it has already received a lot of attention online.
MEC Mvoko also used the opportunity to congratulate St Francis Bay and Port Alfred, this after the two were awarded Blue Flag marina sites.
This is additional to the province seven beaches retained Blue Flag beaches and these are Kariega (Kenton-on-Sea), Hobie (Nelson Mandela Bay), Humewood (Nelson Mandela Bay), Kings (Nelson Mandela Bay), Dolphin (Jeffreys Bay), Kelly’s (Port Alfred) and Hamburg (Between Port Alfred and East London).
Mvoko concluded by reminding role players and the public that the safety and security of the locals and visitors alike are and must be viewed as paramount. “While the summer holidays are all about having fun, we need to be sure that we are doing all that we can to keep ourselves and our visitors safe this season” concluded Mvoko.
Dr Wouter Hensens who is the Executive Dean of Stenden and Vice Chairman of Sunshine Coast Tourism Board welcomed the government’s commitment to upgrade tourism infrastructure, especially access roads and said they are optimistic about the growth prospects of the province.
