As a clear indication of the commitment to supporting electric vehicle users, the Eastern Cape Government has launched new EV charging stations infrastructure in Mthatha and East London. The project will provide seamless e-mobility charging solutions through these 13 stations, which will be set up along national routes in the Eastern Cape, with the process of securing more sites underway.
The government, through the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs, and Tourism (DEDEAT), funded the project with R18 million. This investment will facilitate the use of EVs and connect the province to others like KwaZulu-Natal, said MEC for DEDEAT, Mlungisi Mvoko. This occasion marks a significant milestone in the Eastern Cape automotive sector, with a multi-phased rollout of EV charging infrastructure to support and encourage the use of electric vehicles, promoting benefits in two regions.
This initiative is yet another demonstration of the state following through on its commitments. It represents the realisation of the Eastern Cape government’s plan to install 13 EV charging stations in the province, as announced by Premier Oscar Mabuyane during his State of the Province Address.
The project is being implemented through the Automotive Industry Development Centre – Eastern Cape.
