The Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) welcomes the Member of the Executive Council (MEC), Ms Nonkqubela Ntomboxolo Pieters as its new political head. MEC Pieters brings with her a wealth of experience and a strong commitment to service delivery.
Ms Mickey Mama, Head of Department, expressed her enthusiasm for MEC Pieters appointment. “We are delighted to welcome MEC Pieters. We are confident that under her guidance, we will continue to build on our achievements and tackle the challenges ahead with renewed vigour” says Ms Mama.
MEC Pieters has a distinguished track record in public service. Her experience includes serving as the MEC for Eastern Cape Rural Development and Agrarian Reform since 2021 and chairperson of the Eastern Cape Economic Development Cabinet Committee during the 6th government administration. She also held the position of MEC for Human Settlements from 2019 to 2021. Additionally, MEC Pieters served as the Mayoral Committee Member from 2006 to 2016 and Speaker of the Cacadu District Municipality (now known as Sarah Baartman District Municipality) from 2016 to 2018. She has been a dedicated member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature since 2019.
The Department also extends its heartfelt gratitude to our outgoing political head, MEC Mlungisi Mvoko, for his exceptional leadership and dedication over the past years. Under MEC Mvoko’s stewardship, the department has achieved significant milestones, including substantial improvements in overall performance, successful implementation of key projects, and enhanced support for MSMEs and environmental initiatives.

His leadership has been instrumental in driving our mission forward and setting the foundation for future successes. We wish him all the best as he focuses now on the mandate of Provincial Treasury” added Ms Mama. As we welcome MEC Pieters, the department remains committed to its mission of promoting sustainable economic development and environmental stewardship.
