During the build-up activity, DEDEAT entities showcased their services and opportunities to an over 200 women dominated audience. Representatives from various entities provided information on services and opportunities available to the women in the area.

She urged women and young people to explore opportunities in sectors with growth potential in the Sarah Baartman District (SBD), emphasising that success requires commitment, hard work, and the willingness to invest time.

Addressing the tourism sector, MEC Pieters noted that the Eastern Cape Parks and Tourism Agency supports businesses in the sector but acknowledged the slow pace of transformation, particularly in parts of the SBD.

MEC Pieters also appealed to community members to combat alcohol abuse, especially urging pregnant women to avoid alcohol consumption. She mentioned that the Eastern Cape Liquor Board monitors compliance of licensed outlets with trading conditions.

During the afternoon programme at Misgund Junior Secondary School, where she donated school shoes, sanitary towels, and netball kits, MEC Pieters emphasised the importance of keeping children in class without interruptions due to lack of basic necessities. She urged pupils to stay away from alcohol and sexual activities, stressing that their future depends on their attitudes and choices.

Together with its seven entities, the department will join the Premier-led provincial government in celebrating Provincial Women’s Day in Kou-Kamma on August 9, 2024, and will conduct more handovers and provide services on wheels.
