MEC PIETERS LAUNCHES THE PROVINCIAL ROAD SAFETY FESTIVE SEASON CAMPAIGN

The Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT), led by MEC Nonkqubela Pieters, officially launched the Road Safety Festive Season Campaign in partnership with Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. The campaign, which is driven by the Eastern Cape Liquor Board, an entity of DEDEAT seeks to educate road users about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or walking intoxicated on public roads. It was launched today, 06 December 2024, in Gqeberha.

During the campaign launch, which included motor vehicle inspections and engagements with motorists, MEC Pieters emphasised the government’s deep concern about individuals who choose to drive under the influence of alcohol—a dangerous behaviour that becomes especially prevalent during the festive season.

“Alcohol intoxication significantly increases the risk of road traffic crashes and fatalities for all road users. We remain deeply worried by the increasing rate of alcohol consumption in our communities and urge road users to desist from taking alcohol and everyone else to consume alcohol responsibly—know your limits and stop before it’s too late,” said MEC Pieters.

The MEC highlighted the positive outcomes of previous campaigns, which contributed to a notable reduction in road accidents during the last festive season. However, the government remains deeply concerned about accidents caused by alcohol consumption.

Under the theme “Your Family Awaits Your Safe Arrival: Don’t Drink and Drive”, MEC Pieters called on all road users to prioritise safety. She reminded road users that lives lost to road crashes are more than mere statistics—they are loved ones whose absence deeply impacts families, communities and the economy.

The provincial government also used the occasion to appeal to liquor traders to comply with their trading conditions, including refraining from selling alcohol to underage individuals and adhering to legislated trading hours. MEC Pieters raised concerns about the growing prevalence of underage drinking in the Eastern Cape, which is often linked to events such as Pens Down parties.

MEC Pieters also extended her festive wishes to all residents of the province. “Let me wish all the people of the Eastern Cape a Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year! Remember, your family awaits your safe arrival—don’t drink and drive,” she concluded.
