Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA)

The Promotion of Access to Information Act, 2 of 2000 (as amended) (“PAIA”) was enacted to give effect to the constitutional right of access to:

  • Information held by the State, and
  • Information held by another person that is required for the exercise or protection of any rights.

The purpose of PAIA is to foster a culture of transparency and accountability in both public and private bodies by:

  • Enabling access to information; and
  • Actively promoting a society in which individuals have effective access to the information necessary for the full and proper exercise and protection of their rights.

Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA)

The Department of Economic Development, Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) complies with the Protection of Personal Information Act, 4 of 2013 (“POPIA”).

The Department respects the security, integrity, and confidentiality of all personal information in its possession or under its control, and has implemented a range of safeguards to protect it.

DEDEAT has taken, and will continue to take, appropriate and reasonable measures to prevent:

  • Loss of, damage to, or unauthorised access to personal information; and
  • The unlawful processing of personal information.

As a data subject, you have the right to request that DEDEAT:

  • Correct, update, delete, or destroy your personal information;
  • Object to the processing of your personal information; or
  • Exercise any other rights as provided for in POPIA.
